Celebration to end the first phase of development
Shabbat Behar 5768 - Saturday 17 May 2008
by Jackie Richards
Have you ever known something really drastic is going to happen but it is out of your personal control? You had to face the challenge; there was nothing you could do about it. How did you react and feel inside? What inner strength did you find? Did you call on others to help you? Did you seek support from God? To what extent did you feel the glass was half full or half empty. Were you excited or panicking in despair? Well, the portion this week is concerned about trust and coping.

Yom HaAtzmaut - Israel at 60
Shabbat Kedoshim 5768 - Saturday 3 May 2008
by Rabbi Shulamit Ambalu
Anyone here who is signed up to our Community e-mail list will know that a very difficult debate was happening there, between a couple of people, just over a week ago. One writer wrote in to the list asking people to sign a letter saying that they could not celebrate Israel?s 60th anniversary. This writer included a number of statements about some of the historical events that happened in 1948, in the run up to the declaration of Israel?s independence. A second writer, and then still more, wrote in to say that they never wanted to receive these kinds of messages. They were angry at the content; they saw no place for such a discussion on our community e-mail list.

A number of theories are flying around, but it?s probably true that this Shabbat got its name from the people, who noticed that they got home from Shul especially late this Shabbat because of the length of the sermon. In the days when a sermon was given only twice a year, on the Shabbat before Yom Kippur and on the Sabbath before Pesach, this was the opportunity for the rabbi to preach at length about Pesach and all of its observances.

A Kingdom of Priests?
Shabbat Tetzaveh 5768 - Saturday 16th February 2008
by Rabbi Shulamit Ambalu
I am not a naturally dressy person. If you saw me on my ordinary days when I am at home or even working from home, you would find me dressed in jeans and a scruffy t-shirt, with perhaps an ancient pair of trainers to finish off the outfit. It?s not that I don?t like dressing up; it?s just that I really like old comfortable clothing.
